Tetra WebBBS
2010-03-07
Some people may wonder what the TetraBB project is heading for in 2010. Well, ....... here is the current look to the future.
Tetra WebBBS
Since version 6.10 was released quite a few sites have upgraded their forums already and the boards are running fine. However, we've received very little feedback. Only very few people showed up on support board, which certainly is an indicator that upgrades went smooth.
On the other hand there is a large number of sites which are running older Tetra-WebBBS versions and there are a lot of sites on the net still running implementations of Darryl's old WebBBS 5.1x.
All these sites obviously need to upgrade sooner or later, esp. because cookies of all versions older than 6.1x will stop working by the end of this year. Taking this fact into account it's probably wise to allow some time for upgrades to the current version before we should throw out more major releases.
As a bottomline Tetra-WebBBS 6.1x is supposed to stay the current version for the rest of this year. We'll push out some minor versions as stated below, but no major upgrades.
TetraBB PRO
In 2010 available programming resources will go into the TetraBB PRO branch of the project.
There are a few important features which have been asked for and which I need for several of my own sites.
Some prototype code is doing fine on testing sites and is ready to be included into the PRO suite now.
If all goes well we'll at least see one upgrade of TetraBB PRO during 2010.
Tools and Services
A few ideas for new tools came up in the past. Now it's time to work on these tools. Furthermore we may start new network based services or at least create some prototypes. Both likely require small changes to the core scripts to plugin the new tools or enable Tetra-WebBBS to use newly created network services. Thus we'll likely see some more 6.1x releases of Tetra-WebBBS in 2010.
Project Website and Documentation
Current plan is to update this website. Refurbish the showroom for example, if time permits, and work on the documentation. Some of the items on this ToDo list have already been solved successfully:
The latest subproject is finished and released to the public: Tetra-WebBBS 6.1 Documentation and Administration Guide.
Enough work for the rest of the year, even though we'll allow Tetra-WebBBS 6.1x to stay current for a while.
Comments and questions welcome on support board.
