Tetra WebBBS

Project news

2008-4-7

Well folks, it's time to keep you posted about this project.
Some of you may have noticed the term "Tetra-Team" has been removed from the header of the site. The reason is simple, there is no such thing as Tetra-Team any more.

Two years ago 4 people interested in WebBBS started to pick up where Darryl left off in 2002. - Tetra-Team was founded.
By the beginning of 2007 only Tarty and me actively worked on the project.
Several weeks ago Tarty stated to retire from this project.
So now I'm the only one remaining from the group which started 2 years ago and obviously Tetra-Team isn't existing any more.

What now? - Well, business as usual!

Here are some details:
I'll continue this project as I always planned, though I may adopt priorities to the needs of those actively supporting.
As I'm using this software on my own sites I'm personally in need for improvements.
I know there are several forumsites out there which rely on this software and I feel obligated to support them.
Fortunately there are a few people actively supporting this project either by running new prerelease versions on their live sites or by booking for ongoing maintenance.
Last but not least and very important: Steve is helping a bunch by doing all sort of testing, commenting and revealing bugs. He's a great first-pass tester. - Thanks Steve.

What to expect for the future then?

Well, obviously manpower is limited. On the other hand there is a saying "Grain by grain and the hen fills her belly." ;)
In other words: what's done next is a matter of priority.
Sorting priorities is simple.
In general I'll follow the long-term roadmap of

  • refactoring the existing Tetra-WebBBS to a fully template based, even more flexible forum system becoming faster and runnable on mod_perl and such. - Possibly the profiles become the first item touched.
  • working on TetraBB PRO offering advanced features which have never been available before
  • work on Tetra-WebBBS and TetraBB PRO will more or less alternate.

Besides this general approach the following get higher priority:

  • Stuff I need for my own sites ;)
  • Stuff urgently needed by those sites actively contributing to the project
  • Sponsored features - as long as they are of general interest and doable in a reasonable time

To be honest, there is so much stuff already prototyped and waiting to be pushed out of the garage. - It definitely will become an interesting year.

One downside though:
Almost 4 months ago with the release of 5.30 Beta docs where announced to be released ASAP.
Now it turns out docs are still not available for 5.30.
I apologize for any inconvenience. All I can say is that I'll need to start working on 5.30 docs from scratch and will do immediately. Docs won't be as perfect as they used to be as English is not my first language, but I'll do my best to serve you with something usable.

Comments welcome of course. Please use discussion board.
