.... the same feature allows to display a configurable number of recent posts (or one random post) for various other purpose.

E.g.:
(1) Take a look at the message index page here on this board. Above the list is a "Hot Topics" area with five items. The first two are such quickinfo calls pulling the latest post from 'boards' on another site (talkaboutspam.org). The last item pulls the latest post from the announcements board here on this server.

(2) with a bit of CSS formatting one could even create something very similar to Google ads like the one displayed below this text on the message display page. For example display the latest post of a board with a teaser or a small list of the last 5 posts with subject lines only ... and of course let such things be pulled from other sites ... in case you're running more than one website and want to distribute your content

Sorry for all the examples. Likely overwhelming .... but unfortunately there are too many options available with this software .... and you must not ask me about such things.
