Re: What motivates us to keep giving away doughnut

: coz: a) it's fun

First, i am not trying to rebut you. I am just asking questions, see if i can understand it better.

Fun? what fun? Satisfaction from tackling and solving problems? Satisfaction from having a large and active community?

Some loose thoughts of mine:

-When a community becomes so active that it eats up your leisure time, it becomes a daily routine. Doing it for a while is fun. Doing it 'for life' is like having a 2nd day job. With your better half at your back repeatedly yelling 'you are wasting time on the Net always and again,' in time, it will become a burden.

-My experience over the past 3 years: many if not most people would just disappear after getting free help/mods/script. These people give me no incentive for helping them (or others) further. I believe they should be charged something, at least. I don't know, maybe i am tired of seeing people taking candies
from the jar without putting in a thankyou note at least.

: b) it's not reinventing the wheel but building a new wheel.
: You know there are large wheels, small ones, large
: footprint, small footprint, cheap, expensive, high load,
: high speed.. lots of different wheels. All are wheels, but
: for different flavors.
: Bulletin boards is the same.
: There is none out there exept WebBBS which actually fits my
: needs, so I use this wheel and want it to run even longer.
: And I'm willing to share a copy of my existing wheel with
: others.

Willing to share your wheel with others is one thing. Willing to provide support for and upgrade to the wheel is another. The latter is a continous and time consuming job. So, it goes back to one core question: What's there to motivate us to do it on a continuous basis *in the longer term,* IF we are providing the script, the support and the upgrade for free? Or do i misunderstood the Freedom vs Free Doughnut concept completely?
