Important: Managed dedicated servers on 1and1

Hi folks.

This is some important information for those site owners running their forums on a "managed" dedicated server offered by 1and1 (all datacenters worldwide).

By accident I've run a server out of disc quota yesterday while working on a long overdue upgrade of a laaaarge forum with several 100K of messages and associated images.

That was a managed dedicated box in 1and1s German datacenter with a 1TB hard drive. Nobody would have expected that box to exceed disc quota.

... well .... in the end it turns out that 1and1 applies new limits on those boxes. The new limit is a maximum number of a bit more than 1,000,000 files per server, regardless of the hard drive (even if it's a 1TB drive!).

I've received a confirmation meanwhile that all managed servers will be effected. 1and1 can't or doesn't want to take responsibility for managing more than 1,000,000 files.
The person for whom I worked last night was told by 1and1 support that their maintenance tools (backup tools) can't handle more than that number of files.

Another piece of information is coming from the UK branch. Their support said that ALL managed accounts/servers at 1and1 will be limited until June 11.

If you're running a managed server with 1and1 you're probable better off to check your disc quota NOW and consider precaution before your interactive websites go downhill.

Must admit this is a really nasty thing. Esp. because the company didn't notify their customers.
Who expects a server with a limit of 48,000,000 inodes today to be limited down to a bit more than 1,000,000 in a few days.

Option the company suggests:
Switch to a root server.

The old saying becomes true again: nothing on this world is unlimited. .... and sometimes the limit is lower than expected :(
