Hi Julian.
Well, not a backdoor actually.
However it's a shortcoming of course. But it's hard to deal with because the issue isn't limited to blanks.
Consider
"JO" vs. "J0"
"Julian v.H" vs "Julian v.H" (you won't even notice double blanks)
"SIMON" vs "SlMON"
... and tons of others attempts.
The key however is that the profile for "Kai" should still be safe because "Kai " isn't "Kai ". Thus on message display pages "Kai" (the registered name) should be linked to the profile whereas "Kai " (the unregistered name) should not be linked to the profile. Just to be sure I just checked on my current DEV machine.
Easy to distinguish if a poster is registered or not
Guess you know by profession how many options there are to mess with spelling and how little changes of spelling may distort the meaning of words.
Better rely on literal meaning such as "Kai" isn't "Kai " thus posts by "Kai " are not linked to the profile owned by "Kai".
Glad you brought this up and gave me a chance to post some stuff which sounds weird on a first and second read
Cheers
Rainer
