Visited your site a bit and read a couple of pages, then stumbled across the issue:
Seems links on your site are not consistent.

The link you provided in your initial post was a "www.yourdomain...." sort of link. Some links on your site seem to point to "yourdomain...". Such things create two cookies and depending on bookmarks or the path users take to get to your board(s) they'll end up with either of two cookies or no cookie. Even worse, depending on browser settings an input like 'yourdomain.com' might either be prefixed only with the protokoll type or an additional 'www' prefix.

Solution is pretty easy:
Upgrade your forum and set the $force_domain variable - Done.

I hear you ranting about your modified old version. As always: the downside of modifications

Then go the other way:
Ensure ALL links on your site and all it's pages point to the same URL
