MailDigest is a tool for sending out notification emails to subscribers to your forum. Though MailDigest can be run via browser or commandline it's basically intended to be invoked as a cronjob.

The new version is a replacement for the old *digest.pl* by Darryl Burgdorf.

MailDigest can use either Sendmail (resp. any Sendmail-equivalent server) or SMTP for sending out the digests.

Besides several improvements the new tool allows for sending out notification emails using SMTP servers that require authentification, which is becoming more and more common these days.
In fact you may use *any* SMTP mailbox you are allowed to login for sending mails, regardless if the mailserver is provided by your webhost or any other host. Only requirement is you must be granted access to send out a larger number of emails in one chunk.
