Some rules of thumb:

1. Small or moderately frequented private or small business forums
   You'll be fine on a medium-sized shared hosting account.

2. Large high-traffic forums/sites
   Obviously you'll be better off having your own dedicated server or at least a larger Virtual Private Server (VPS) package.


3. "medium" sized forums?
   It depends on what *medium* means, really.
   Besides the disc space, you'll need the appropriate guaranteed CPU power and RAM. This is especially important when your forums grow in future and are frequently visited. We're talking about 100+ posts daily, the number of messages on the forum, it's archives, as well as the number of visitors reading the forums. Take into account the other sections of your website - do they require CPU and RAM as well?
   Bottomline for these sites:
   Either get the largest shared account (see #2) or get yourself the smallest VPS.
   


4. Take into account that you most likely expect your forums and community to grow. Find a reasonable compromise for your specific needs.
