Tetra WebBBS Frequently Asked Questions
No, tetrabb.com doesn't provide hosting services.
However, we've been active on the net since the mid 90s and have seen quite a few webhosts meanwhile. So as a result we do know a few hosts which can be recommended.
Be aware, that these recommendations are based on our private experience and our knowledge at the time of writing this FAQ, which is supposed to get you started investigating hosting plans and find the right webhost for *your* personal needs.
Think well before making a decision ... and don't blame us if you made the wrong one!
Before clicking any of the recommendation links you should read all the FAQ on this board flagged as a [Hosting] topic (FAQ-index). There is valuable information which will help you to decide what might be appropriate for your website: a shared hosting account, a virtual or dedicated server, a managed or root (virtual) server. This is the primary decision to make. Selecting a hosting company is the second step, it requires you to know what you're looking for.
Finally, here is the list of recommended hosting.
(Please note: All links below are referral links. Tetrabb.com receives a referral fee if you click those links and order a hosting plan within a defined period. These referral fees help us to keep the lights on and the server running at tetrabb.com. However, it's your decision to use the links or not.)
(1) Recommended hosting
In the first place we recommend the company where our own site is running: 1and1.
The good thing about 1and1 is, that it's a full service provider, offering everything from shared hosting packages to all sort of virtual or dedicated servers, managed and root. This makes it more convenient to upgrade to larger plans once a website grows and requires more resources.
Personally I'm with 1and1 for more than 10 years now, running all sort of plans there for my own sites and maintaining client's accounts. I've never run into a problem which couldn't be solved within a reasonable time.
Be aware, that 1and1 has caps on CGI usage - which is a very good thing to protect the server AND your own site. Pick the right plan for your project! - On a shared account do NOT chose the small plans, pick form the upper half of shared plans - at the time of this writing pick at least the 'Business plan' (might have be renamed though)!
Regarding prices it's been as simple as this for years now: on the lower end (shared plans) they offer a reasonsable pricing which isn't always the cheapest available on the net, but it's worth the money. However, in the medium range (virtual hosting) and on the upper end (dedicated servers) they have very competitive prices. All services offerend are reliable. - But, again you must pick the right plan for your project.

(2) Alternate recommendation for cheap shared hosting
This is meant as an alternate recommendation only for those who can't afford the prices for shared hosting recommended in #1.
The alternate recommendation is bluehost.
They offer one single product, a shared hosting plan which is very cheap for the features they advertise.
Note that they have limits on CGI usage and mailing lists, which in fact is good to protect the server AND your own site.
I'm servicing a site running on bluehost.com for almost a year now, using Tetra-WebBBS for a busy forum. So I think bluehost is worth a recommendation for those of you who plan to run a private site with a small to medium sized forum with moderate traffic.
Be aware bluehost offers only one product! If you plan on running a growing business or website you may encounter problems with bluehost's limits and need to switch hosts in future. - That's the main point why bluehost is only recommended as an alternate solution.
(3) Webhosts worth a closer look
Below is a list of hosting companies offering plans which are supposed to be OK for running Tetra-WebBBS forums.
Please note: we do NOT have intimate knowledge of their services.
Those links made it into the list because we either know that forums are running there (without knowing about the details) or that we've been asked to review their offers and 'think' they offer plans which are appropriate.
These links are for informational purpose only. Check out everything carefully!
